Residuum Upgrading

Residuum upgrading, or hydroconversion, involves hydrogen addition to residua from crude/vacuum distillation to produce low sulfur, higher-quality products. Chevron Lummus Global, a joint venture between Lummus Technology and Chevron U.S.A., Inc., offers several proven technologies for resid upgrading.

The atmospheric residuum desulfurization (RDS) and vacuum residuum desulfurization (VRDS) technologies target residue desulfurization to produce low sulfur fuel oil or feedstock for residuum FCC units. The RDS and VRDS technologies are often complemented with an Upflow Reactor (UFR®) or On-stream Catalyst Replacement (OCR®) unit to extend catalyst run length.

Residuum hydrocracking involves high conversion of residua utilizing the LC-FINING™, LCMAX® or LC-SLURRY processes. Residue hydrocracking feedstock can be straight-run residua or residue from a solvent deasphalting (SDA) unit. Products from residue hydrocracking require use of ISOCRACKING® or ISOTREATING® technology to meet final specifications. Unconverted oil from residue hydrocracking can be sent to the delayed coking unit, sold as fuel oil, or used as feed to gasifiers or boilers.

Residue Hydroprocessing

Chevron Lummus Global (CLG), a joint venture between Lummus Technology and Chevron U.S.A., Inc., offers several proven technologies for resid hydroprocessing.

Solvent Deasphalting (SDA)

Solvent deasphalting (SDA) is a separation process in which residues are separated by molecular type by mixing with paraffinic solvents and precipitating out of solution asphaltenes and other residue heavy components. It can be used for lubes base oil feedstock, for vacuum gas oil conversion feedstock for residue hydrocracking feedstock while the pitch product can be used for delayed coking feedstock, as a fuel oil blending component, gasifier feed or blended into asphalts.
