Residue Cracking

Resid FCC

The Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and Resid FCC (RFCC) processes have long been trusted workhorses in the refining industry to meet the demand for motor fuels. The FCC/RFCC processes utilize a powdered catalyst that continuously circulates between a short contact time reaction zone (riser) and a higher temperature regeneration zone where coke deposits are removed by burning in presence of air. Lummus Technology’s FCC/RFCC licensed technologies are continuously improved to meet today’s refinery challenges, including:

  • Cracking a wide range of feedstocks (heavy vacuum gasoils to residues)
  • Increasing operational flexibility
  • Shifting the yield slates from maximum gasoline to maximum diesel and vice-versa

Lummus Technology’s FCC/RFCC processes employ Micro-Jet Plus™ feed injectors for intimate contact of feed with the hot regenerated catalyst, enhancing catalytic cracking as well as minimizing unwanted thermal cracking reactions. ModGrid® stripper internals achieve high efficiency hydrocarbon removal from the spent catalyst.

The patented Reaction Termination Device, incorporating proprietary direct-coupled cyclones, rapidly and efficiently separates the catalyst from vapors at the end of the riser. In addition, our FCC technology utilizes a patented Multi-Stage Orifice (MSO™) combustion air distributor design and proprietary spent catalyst distributor for superior regenerator performance. These are commercially proven and cost-effective technology features that result in substantial performance and reliability improvements. They can be easily implemented during planned turnaround schedules.

Lummus Technology can help refiners identify the areas of maximum benefit and implement the identified changes on a fast-track basis with a single-source integrated approach. This includes basic engineering, detailed engineering and procurement, all the way through to construction and startup.
