About Lummus

Legacy & Leadership

With a heritage spanning more than 115 years and a focus on innovation that has resulted in more than 150 technologies and 4,100 patents and patent applications, Lummus is the global leader in the development and implementation of process technologies that make modern life possible. While our reach is global, we pride ourselves on fostering local relationships to meet the needs of each customer, efficiently and effectively.

Lummus Technology began in 1907 with the foresight, planning and entrepreneurial spirit of Walter E. Lummus, the company’s namesake. The first office was located in Boston, with a manufacturing facility in Everett, Massachusetts. The first process technology the company worked on was the production of transportation fuels from bio-feeds such as molasses. During the early years, Lummus produced pot stills and condensers, scrubbing columns, caustic soda dissolvers, heat exchangers and distillation columns.

From those early years through many generations of employees, there has been one constant:

Lummus has always been one of the world's most innovative Technology licensing companies.

In 2020, Lummus started a new and notable chapter in its 110-plus year history when Rhône Capital and The Chatterjee Group purchased the business and established it as a standalone company. Today, Lummus stands apart from all others as the global leader in developing and implementing process technologies. We are the leading licensor of  technologies in clean fuels, renewables, petrochemicals, polymers, gas processing and supply lifecycle services, catalysts, proprietary equipment and digitalization to customers worldwide.
